Garden District Walking Tour and Peek Into Lafayette Cemetery #1

On a beautiful day, this is the tour to take. Admire the incredible homes and smell the flowers! Plan to spend the entire day in this part of town - eating, drinking and window shopping on Magazine Street, riding the streetcar…

The Historic Garden District is a suburban neighborhood laid out in the 1830’s that attracted ‘Americans’ who came to New Orleans to find fortune and fame after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The Americans were mostly English speakers and Protestant. They built homes ‘upriver’ away from the Creole population who lived in the downtown neighborhoods of the French Quarter, Treme and Marigny.

We will stroll past the homes of current celebrity residents Sandra Bullock and John Goodman as well as former residents - the Mannings of football fame, Nicholas Cage, Anne Rice and Benjamin Button and the Witches of American Horror Story Season 3. You will see how different architecture styles of Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Empire have been interpreted to suit the climate and culture in New Orleans. By the end of the tour, you’ll be able to easily differentiate between a shotgun, a Creole cottage, and a side hall or center hall cottage.

NOTE: The City of New Orleans has closed Lafayette Cemetery #1 on 9/19/19, to make repairs, and it’s still closed although repairs have not yet been made. Not to be deterred, we will peer through the wrought iron gates and discuss New Orleans burial traditions. The City has not indicated when Lafayette #1 will reopen to small private tour groups like Welcome to New Orleans Tours.
